Wed 23 June, Prehen House, Derry, 8 :15 to 9:15 pm (following FCT AGM).
Emily Smyth is Course Director for Landscape Architecture and lecturer in Architecture at the School of Architecture and Design, University of Ulster, Belfast. She is a Member of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Architecture and the Built Environment in Northern Ireland (MAG) and a committee member of the Landscape Institute Northern Ireland branch (LINI).
People, place, lifestyle, ecology, sustainability, identity, heritage, management – landscape is all of these. The discipline of landscape architecture exists to design, enhance and sustain our external environment – to create the heritage areas of tomorrow. Emily will present landscape architecture in Northern Ireland, particularly with reference to Civic Trust Awards winning schemes in Northern Ireland since they were introduced in 1959. The diversity of the award winning projects reveals the breadth of the practice which is landscape architecture.
What is landscape? What is landscape architecture? What is the Landscape Institute / and LINI? Who are the LINI practices, and what do they do? What is the Civic Trust Awards? What are the winning criteria and why? Critique of Northern Ireland’s winning schemes. What is next for landscape architecture…? Planning capacity and Green Infrastructure…
Colin Kennedy, Landscape Architect of Derry City Council will give a site visit to Bishops Field District Park in Creggan, in Derry city, 6.45-7.45pm. This visit will be open to the public and taking place while the FCT AGM is going on. It is hoped that LINI members will then proceed to Prehen House afterwards for 8 / 8.15pm.

This post is available through a ‘Graduate Acceleration Programme (GAP)’ run by Business in the Community NI.
The post is to assist with coordination of the 2010 LINI exhibition which is to be held in August and September in the new ‘OUT OF PLACE’ premises rented by PLACE on Castle Street in town. There has been a previous graduate in the post until last week, but she has now left (she got a ‘real job’) and so the position is vacant again. The placement is unpaid, but the graduate continues to claim job seeker’s allowance, and LINI pay expenses etc. The placement is based in a landscape architecture office in Belfast.

The Landscape Institute Northern Ireland branch (LINI) and the University of Ulster School of Architecture and Design present the 2010 landscape architecture lecture series, SCALE, to stimulate debate regarding the achievability of durable valued environments. (Scale: surface and weight, music and temperature, climb and proportion). Throughout noticeable current changes to our public environment (place, community, energy, transit, waste) and the evolution of governance - how do we create the heritage areas of tomorrow?
